Germination

When you can't wait to start to work on the field or your garden and you are really impatient, like I am, you start to think and plan what you will plant, what you will grow this year. After we dug, and let the soil rest, we started to plan what we will grow this year, we also draw some plams, so we can exactly plan what will be where. When all was planned, we got an unexpected gift, our small greenhouse so we had to start over and we had to plan all over again :)
Even if we didn't knew exactly what we will plant and where, our impatience didn't gave us peace, so we started germinate seeds. Yeah we could wait a couple of months and we could purchase seedlings and just plant them, but that is not fun, it's to easy and plants aren't ours. So we decided that we will have as  many of our seedlings and plants as we can. It was January and we started to germinate.

Last year all of our seeds were germinated in soil. Standard procedure, pots with soil, then insert seeds not too deep and wait. The percent of success was very low, from 10 seeds maybe 3 grew into little plants. I was very disappointed, so i searched the net and learned that for a successful germination seeds need a lot of humidity and high and constant temperature. Last year my temperature was quite low especially at night and lot of times, i forgot to irrigate so this was the result..3 out of 10...
I searched further and I saw a method of germination that many people use and that is in plastic boxes or containers with lids,  so I adopted this method. The procedure is quite simple, I used plastic containers with lid, those that we usually use for food, inside i put a few paper towels and on them I put my seeds. Since I had various types I've also marked the paper towels with a square so I knew what was where. After that the paper towels were irrigated and the containers were placed on OR in a constantly warm place. I decided to use my home cinema amplifier, I turned it on and placed my containers closed with lid on it. Since when the amplifier is working he is also heating enough to keep the seeds on  a constant temperature between 24 and 25°C. I saw that some persons use even internet modems to keep the containers warm.
I had my little two leafed plants in a really short time between 6 - 12 days depends from species of plant. Next I took plastic yogurt containers or plastic cups, i punctured them so that they have at least three holes on the bottom, filled them with soil and with tweezers I planted my plants in them. All was done, ready to grow!!! Success rate 8 out of 10

But... we were in January... Nothing grows in January I outrun nature for at least a couple of moths... Plant to grow needs sunlight, a temperature above 15°C so I've decided and I've build a improvised Grow-box. I used some old wood, an old aquarium top with 2 neon lights in it and some aluminum foil. Nothing special just to keep them warm and under UV light. At least I tough, as it seemed it, wasn't done well and the temperature was only about 13°C and plants didn't grow as they should. But at least they survived the time until I've put them in our greenhouse. Well I learned some new things for next year :)
